Moon
orbits the earth. An object which
orbits a planet is called satellite.
New Moon: When we are in
the “New” Moon phase, the Moon is not visible from our perspective because it
is positioned between the Sun and Earth.
Waxing Crescent moon: when we see
only a sliver of the moon’s surface we call it waxing crescent moon.
Waxing crescent moon shows the start of the
lunar month.
First Quarter Moon: This one confuses a lot of people. In this
case, the term is used because the Moon is in the first quarter of the 30-day cycle,
but it appears half full. The First Quarter and Last Quarter
Moons (both called “half-moons”) happen when the Moon is at a 90 degree
angle with respect to the Earth and Sun. So we are seeing exactly the
half of the moon that gets hit by the Sun’s light.
Waxing
Gibbous moon: it occurs when more than half
of the lit portion of the moon can be seen.
Full
Moon: When the moon’s surface is fully
lighted, it is called as full moon.
Waning
Gibbous Moon: When we can see roughly
three quarter of the moon’s surface.
Last
Quarter Moon: It is phase when half of the
lit portion of the moon is visible after the waning gibbous phase.
Waning Crescent Moon: The Moon is a little sliver of a crescent,
just as in no 2, but the illuminated part is decreasing.
Two terms to memorize:
Waxing = Growing in illumination
Waning = Shrinking in illumination
