Heredity in Organisms

  • The transfer of characteristics from parents to offspring is called heredity.
  • Every living organism, (plants animals, and human being) has a set of characteristics inherited from its parents.
  • Cell division can occur in two ways, mitosis and meiosis.

  •   Mitosis is the process of cell division during which a parent cell divides into two genetically identical daughter cell.
  • Mitosis occurs only in somatic cell.
  • Daughter cell has complete set of chromosomes.
  • The number of chromosome remains same.
  • Meiosis is a type of cell division in which a parent cell is divides in to four daughter cell each having half           number of chromosomes.
  • Meiosis occurs in germ cell.
  • Daughter cells have half number of chromosomes.

Identification of DNA and chromosomes in cell diagram:

  • The transfer of characteristics from parents to their offspring  is called heredity.

  • The bases of heredity are the following material present in the nucleus.

  • Chromosomes: A chromosome is the basis of heredity.

  • Chromosomes made up of two types of molecules, DNA and protein.

  • DNA (De Oxy Ribo Nucleic Acid): DNA is made up of units called nucleotides.

  • Each nucleotide is composed of the following three components. 1) Deoxyribose sugar
    2) Phosphoric acid        3) Nitrogenous base.

  • The shape of DNA looks like twisted ladder which is called double helix shape.

  • Genes: Genes are the basic units of heredity located on chromosomes.

  • The genes of free ear lobes are dominant to attached ear lobes.
