Biotechnology

  • Biotechnology is a branch of science in which living things are used to make better or new products.
  • In biotechnology the genetic material (DNA) of microorganisms is used for production of required product.
  • DNA is made up of units called nucleotide.
  • There are four type of nucleotide (1) adenine nucleotide  (2) guanine nucleotide  (3) cytosine nucleotide               (4) thymine nucleotide
  • The process in which the DNA of a cell is duplicated to make two similar copies of the parents DNA is called Replication.
  • Chromosomes are the colored body present in the nucleus.
  • Chromosome is made up of DNA, coiled many times around a protein called histone.
  • Genes is occur in pairs and are located on chromosomes.
  • Insulin is produced by genetic engineering for the treatment of diabetic patients.
  • Bacteria:

  • Bacteria are unicellular organisms.
  • Cytoplasm, the fluid inside the cell.
  • Bacteria doesn’t has nucleus.
  • Each bacterium has a single chromosome present in the cytoplasm is called nucleoid.
  • Tail like structure that help bacteria move is called flagella.
  • Outer side of bacteria cell is called cell wall.
  • DNA replication is process of coping DNA molecule.
  • A gene is the unit of hereditary material which contains all the information of organism characteristics.
  • The bacterium which takes in the recombinant DNA is called transgenic bacterium or genetically modified bacterium (GMB).
  • Penicillin is an example of antibiotic.
  • The four major areas in which biotechnology techniques are applied include agriculture, food production and preservation, health and environment.
  • Herbicides and pesticides are used to eliminate weeds and insects and thus protect crops.
